Several Vietnamese art history books publishing in Vietnamese language mentioned that the first oil paintings of the country's famous artists like Le Pho, To Ngov Van, Le Thi Luu, Nhuyen Cat Tuong, that were exhibited at the museum in Hanoi after Yr. 1925, were actually their final examinations at the Fine Arts College of Indochina in Hanoi (also called the Ecole de Beaux-Arts de l’indochina. At the time, French professors including Headmaster Victor Tardieu himself, and leading teacher, Joseph Inguimberty, gave the training for oil painting classes. The school's outstanding students were: To Ngoc Van, Nam Son, Le Pho, Vu Can Dam, Tran Van Can, Nguyen Gia Tri, Luu Van Sin, Luong Xuan hi, Trinh Huu Ngoc, Huynh Van Thuan, Phan Tai, Nguyen Sang, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Bui Xuan Phai, Nguyen Quang Phong, Mai Van Hien, Phan Ke An, Duong Bich Lien, Van Can, Pham Viet Song, Ta Ty, and more.
>>> To Ngoc Van, 1906-1954
To Ngoc Van was a master in Vietnamese oil painting. His painting style was influenced by the French impressionist, Gauguin and others. To Ngoc Van paid special attention to forms and rendered with delicacy. He also showed great passion of colors. He brought to Vietnamese art the strong harmonies of colors that later became very popular among Vietnamese artists. Some of his famous oil paintings are: A Girl by Lilies (1943, oil, private collector), Two Girls and a Baby (1943, oil, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum) - above, A Girl Gazing at a Painting Representing a Belle (1938, oil, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum).
>>> Luu Van Sin (1905-1983)
Luu Van Sin was born in Ha Tay province. He was a graduate from the Fine Arts College of Indochina in Hanoi in 1931-1936. He specialized in oil and won the First-class prize award by the Hanoi SADEA in 1937. In 1956-1958, he was a lecturer at the Vietnam Collage of Fine Arts. Luong Xuan Nhi, born in Hanoi, was a painter as well as a professor. He helped bring western oil painting into Vietnam. His paintings are displayed in Fine Art Museum of Vietnam, Museums in Paris, New York and Tokyo. He was known as the Great Painter of Green. Some of his famous paintings are: Palm Hills (1957, oil, Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi) - above, The Steeple (1992, oil, Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi), A Reading Girl (1940, oil, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum).
>>> Tran Van Can 1910-1994
Tan Van Can, born in Hai Phong, is one of the most outstanding painters of the first generation of Vietnam’s modern arts. He painted in oil, on silk and lacquer. During 1958-1983, Tran Van Can served as the Head of the Fine Arts College of Vietnam. He won numerous prizes and his painting was displayed in the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam and abroad. Some of his famous paintings are: Little Thuy (1943, oil, Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi), Military Woman of a Coastal Region (1960, oil, Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi), Irrigation (1958, oil, Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi).
