In Vietnam, painting on silk is popular. Vietnamese artists found these technique to be a unique way to create mystique and a charming sense of mystique in their paintings. By using contemporary colors, Vietnamese silk painting has won the hearts of many art lovers.
After a long period of development of techniques and styles, silk painting reached its highest period of success during the years 1925-1945 . The Vietnamese style of silk painting emphasized softness, elegance and a flexibility of style. These qualities of silk painting were different compared to, at the time, to the dominant French and European oil painting. In 1946, Vietnamese silk painting was accepted and introduced to the world when Vietnamese silk paintings won two prizes at the official Salon organized in France. Silk painting is now popular in Vietnam and has its own unique character and transparency of colors that are different from those of ancient China and Japan.

>>> Nguyen Phan Chanh (1892-1984)
Nguyen Phan Chanh was born in Ha Tinh province, from a poor Confucian scholar family. Previously, he had a teaching degree, then in 1925 when the Fine Arts College of Vietnam opened, Nguyen Phan Chanh attended the school as one of the 1st class students. Nguyen Phan Chanh started introducing silk painting in Vietnamese theme in Vietnam. He realized that the silk painting of ancient China had a unique and transparent appearance. These qualities of silk painting and the Vietnamese expertise in creating them could help Vietnamese artists differentiate their national art of Vietnam from the popular European oil paintings. By using the everyday life scene and charming transparency colors, Nguyen Phan Chanh successfully proved that silk painting could become one of the appropriate art forms of Vietnam. >>> Le Pho (1907-2002)
Le Pho was born in Ha Tay province. He studied at the Fine Arts College of Vietnam in its first class and also went to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris for a brief period. He taught in Vietnam for awhile and went back to France and lived there till he passed away. His painting themes are mainly mother and child with innocent faces, and other daily lives around them. >>> Dang Tin Tuong (1945 - )
Dang Tin Tuong was born in Binh Giang of Hai Duong Province. He was a graduate of BA degree from Hanoi University. He is a self-taught artist with only some graphic arts courses at Hanoi Institute of Fine Arts. He once worked at the Curriculum Department of Hanoi Institute of Fine Arts as well, then from 1984 he worked at the National Workshops of Fine Arts under the Ministry of Culture. He is famous in lacquer and silk paintings and also does acrylic and watercolor on "do" paper. His works are featured at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the Vietnam's Government Guesthouse and The Miami Ethnic Museum in the US. More about Dang Tin Tuong >>
